Cleansing crystals means removing the accumulated spiritual and earthly energies they have absorbed. Cleansing resets the crystal, returning it to its natural state.
This method works best for polished stones. Do not submerge raw or fragile stones in water — for them, smoke cleansing is a safer option.
How to cleanse with water:
Place the crystal in a container with plain water or hold it under running water for a few minutes.
Never use salt water — it can dull the stone and weaken its power.
Light energy enhances the power of stones. It’s best to leave them on a windowsill after noon for about 30 minutes.
This method is very effective but, like water, not suitable for all stones. Some crystals may fade or get “sunburned” if left in direct sunlight for too long.
For example, clear quartz can heat up under direct sunlight and even start a fire if left on paper or wood. Here are some stones you should NOT leave in the sun for long:
Sapphire
Citrine
Beryl
Rose Quartz
Ametrine
Aquamarine
Kunzite
Fluorite
Smoky Quartz
Moonlight is much gentler than sunlight, so you can use it to cleanse any mineral — raw or polished.
There is a special ten-day window in the lunar cycle when cleansing is most effective:
Waxing Moon
Full Moon
Waning Moon
How to cleanse with moonlight:
Place the stone outside or on a windowsill where moonlight shines.
Leave it under the moonlight for several hours.
The energy of stars and other celestial bodies also provides incredibly powerful cleansing.
Stones closely connected to the night sky — like moonstone, meteorite, or moldavite — bring their owner closer to cosmic energies.
Intentionally created sound can cleanse stones of old and negative energy.
Playing an instrument or using a tuning fork, singing bowl, or bell is an excellent cleansing ritual that also fills you with positive energy.
Remember, your own voice chanting a prayer or mantra works perfectly too.
One of the most common and effective ways to cleanse minerals is by smudging them with incense smoke, sage, or herbs.
How to cleanse with smoke:
Open windows and prepare a fireproof container for ashes.
First, cleanse yourself and the space with the incense.
To cleanse the crystal, pass it through the smoke or use your hand, feather, or fan to direct the smoke where needed.
Visualize the smoke removing all negative energy and making the stone ready for your work.
Did you know that some stones can cleanse other stones?
Clear quartz and selenite are considered the most powerful cleansing crystals.
How it works:
Place the crystal you want to cleanse next to clear quartz or selenite — or directly on top of them. They should be in contact.
How often you cleanse your stones depends on how much you use them and your intuitive sense of their energy.
A good rule of thumb is to cleanse crystals:
When you first acquire them.
After they’ve been used for healing or intense work.
At least once a month during the Full Moon to keep their energy bright and effective.
Choose the cleansing method that suits you best. Try a few and see which one resonates most with you!
