Howlite

Stone History

Howlite is a mineral discovered in the mid-19th century by Canadian geologist and chemist Henry How, after whom the stone was named. It was first found in Nova Scotia, Canada, where researchers encountered it as white, porous masses within gypsum deposits. Later, it was also discovered in the United States, particularly in California, where howlite occurs in borate-rich deposits.

Due to its porous structure, howlite is easily dyed, which made it popular in the jewelry industry — it is often colored blue to imitate the more expensive turquoise. In modern mineralogy and esotericism, howlite is highly valued for its calming and relaxing properties, earning it the name "stone of peace."
